International cooperation

This site contains a lot of information about the Rhine and its protection.

It is very important that the countries in the catchment area of the Rhine talk to each other about what we do with the Rhine.

The water in the Rhine does not stop at borders. The water from nine different countries mingles in the Rhine and is carried by it to the North Sea. On its way to the sea the Rhine is used in many different ways, called functions. Sometimes these functions are in conflict. In other words, if you are using the Rhine for one thing, this sometimes stops you using it for other things. And the fact that people use the Rhine can make the water quality worse.

Read more about functions.

Everything inside the Rhine’s catchment area is connected. What happens in one place can have consequences for another place.

This is why the countries in the catchment area work together so that they can use the Rhine and keep it clean. We call this international cooperation.
